Mini Dental Implants - Is a cheaper implant a good idea?
Mini dental implants are titanium implants of diameter less than 3mm. Conventional or standard implants have diameter of more than 3mm. Standard implants usually range from 3mm up to 5mm and have a greater flexibility in the type of attachment that can fitted on top of the implant. Because mini implants have a small diameter there is less flexibility of what type of attachment can be connected onto this. Generally most of the mini dental implants are used for denture stabilisation purposes, as an interim or temporary stage in dental implant treatment procedures.
Popular questions about Mini Dental Implants
Mini dental implants are cheaper. Since they are cheaper they are generally one piece implant and therefore do not require an abutment. However since they are much smaller in diameter more of these are required to give the same sort of stability as standard diameter implants. Although they may be up-to half the price of standard implants more are required so the cost is almost the same but without the long term success rate. Secondly there is less flexibility if at later stage the patient wishes to upgrade to a fixed bridgework.
The procedure for placement of these mini implants is much simpler as these are relatively small diameter and hence there is simpler drilling protocol. However all the standard procedures for oral surgery are observed and a consultation is still required to assess the suitability of the implant procedure for each dental patient
